From the end of September 2025, the Level 3 Award in Energy Awareness 6281-01 assessment format is changing from a fully controlled assessment that must be observed by an assessor to part controlled/ part open book.

The new assessment is split into two parts as follows:

PART 1: SIMULATION BASED ASSESSMENT

This is a 30-minute controlled assessment that must be observed by an assessor on a set date.

The assessor will use role play to create a realistic scenario that allows the candidate to demonstrate their skills.

This will be delivered online via Zoom.

Environment and equipment:

  • Learners must have access to a quiet, private space.
  • A laptop or desktop computer with a separate mouse and a stable internet connection is required.

Joining the assessment:

  • Learners will receive an email containing a Zoom link.
  • This link will connect them to a live session with an assessor who will guide them through the simulation.

Learners will be asked to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrate problem-solving abilities using an electricity bill
  • Explain how to correctly read a dial meter
  • Demonstrate how to set a mechanical programmer and explaining to the assessor the various functions of the programmer.
  • Demonstrate how to set a digital programmable room thermostat.

PART 2: OPEN BOOK WRITTEN ASSESSMENT

This is a non-controlled assessment, meaning it does not require observation by an assessor.

Assessment Details:

  • The assessment will be released to learners upon successful completion of stage 1 (the simulation-based assessment).
  • Learners will receive an email from our online assessment platform (Cloud Assess no-reply@assessapp.com) with instructions and a link to access the written open book assessment.
  • Learners will have 14 calendar days to complete the assessment from the date of release.
  • The assessment consists of a number of short-answer questions.
  • It is an open book format: learners are encouraged to refer to course materials and will also be provided with candidate assessment reference documents.

Environment and equipment

  • Using a laptop or desktop computer for the best experience.
  • Setting aside dedicated, uninterrupted time to complete the assessment.

The assessment will cover:
